Works great, especially with the short extension cord. February 1, 2010 Mark A. Davis (Des Moines, IA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Easy to set and use.
First thing I did was set my electric rate for KWH, which is .031862 - the unit only goes to 3 decimal places, so I rounded to .032
Next, I tested several items - a 3 way lamp, a PC, and the block heater on my diesel Suburban.
The unit appears to be fairly accurate, the 3 way lamp (50/100/150 watt bulb) showed 48/97/148 watts used on each setting, so I was happy with the units accuracy.
Next was my server PC - AMD dual core, two 1gb sata drives - always up and running - annual power bill showed $150 - more that $10 a month, but for the service I get from it, I'm going to keep it on. Turned off my other two boxes, that I only use occasionally, saving me $20 a month!
Next to the block heater - drawing around 500 watts, showed under 40 cents for a full day. I have it plugged it for 8 hours overnight, so that's less than 16 cents each night during the cold months to have it start right up in the morning.
I'll be checking the fridge, freezer, laptop, led lights, florescent lights, projector tv, etc. very soon.
P3 Kill A Watt March 14, 2010 Thomas Luby Works great as described, once you input your power cost, plug in the unit to be measured and let it run. it totals cost, watts used etc.. Tom Luby
Be sure to get the liberator cord July 12, 2010 Mikey (NY, USA) I have not had a chance to examine all of my appliances yet but I will tell you that this is a quality product that is very easy to use and understand. If you take the time with this you will find out a lot about how power hungry your appliances and electronic devices are. I would highly recommend buying this product with the liberator cord so that you don't have to squint at awkward angles to see the display when the outlet is in a difficult spot. Definately will come in handy.
Works well, but could use some refinement November 23, 2009 Matt (Fort Worth, TX) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This product works as described and works well. It is simple to operate and allows the user to make power usage decisions based upon the displayed results. For example, by utilizing the sleep funtion on my desktop computer, I found that I will save approximately $175 a year in energy savings versus leaving my computer on constantly. I also discovered that I use approximately $50 worth of electricty annually by allowing my HP laser printer to stay on constantly; needless to say, I am going to start turning it off when not in use!
The meter is easy to use and simple to set up, however it could use two improvements based upon my experience. (1)The LCD display is somewhat dark and is almost impossible to read in low light situations. A backlit LCD display would be a huge improvement. (2)The other drawback is the way the plug on the meter is oriented. When you plug in the meter, the size of the unit itself, combined with where the plug is located on the back, blocks the other socket on a standard wall socket. This is simply an inconvenience, but you MUST unplug both outlets on a standard wall socket in order to plug the meter in to measure only one socket. A simple workaround for this is to use a short extension cord between the wall socket and the meter. The Amazon version includes the "liberator" cord which would allow for this. My purchase was made elsewhere and didn't include this cord. Regardless, this seems to be an engineering oversight on the part of the manufacturer. Maybe that is why they started including the cord!
All-in-all, this is a very valuable product that can help you see where you are bleeding energy costs.
Good but a built-in light would make it better February 3, 2010 Wilmer M. Nolt (Lancaster,Pa) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great little gadget. It does sverything it says it does. And like some others have mentioned a built-in light sure would make it a lot easier to read in dark corners. I was surprised to learn just how much power my computer is using - about 185 watts, and firing up the laser printer adds another 250 watts. I moniored my 30 year old chest freezer and want to compare the reading to a friends similar newer more effieient freezer. This divice puts you in control of ennergy conservation decisions.
